I've never been to a dive bar before. My friend Matthew had a Five Star/Dive Bar themed birthday and the second stop was at The Codmother. I will admit that this bar was hard to find, considering that you could easily walk past it. Once you find it, you have go down a short flight of stairs. It was cool that brick walls are all chalked up. The bathroom doors have no handles on the exterior.
The Codmother serves booze (including but not limited to PBR, Natty Boh, Genesse, Strohs, Schlitz, Blue Moon, Angry Orchard, Sierra Nevada, Shiner Book, Guinness, Raging Bitch IPA, Sam Adams Summer Ale, and DC Brau IPA/PA) and food (including Fish and Chips, Fish Sandwich, Lamb Burger, Quesadilla, Tacos, Wings, Chicken Tenders, Mozzarella Sticks, Fries, and Fried S'mores Pop Tart).
It was cool to watch movies such as West Side Story and Clockwork Orange and listen to 90's music while sipping on drinks. I asked for a cocktail menu and the bartender told me they didn't have any cocktails. Whatever they had was on a chalkboard behind the bar. I ordered an Angry Orchard but since they were out of it, I settled for a Smith & Forge Hard Cider. The bartender was friendly. My friends and I enjoyed beers, ciders, tequila shots, and fireball shots at the bar. -

Bouncer can't tell a real from a fake. He's denied multiple real IDs. Huge low life who thinks he's cool for working at a shitty bar

Pub is a very generous term to describe The Codmother. I lived in London for a while, and I love me a good pub. This is definitely a straight up dive bar. And a fun one at that. U Street needs more of them, and it is nice to have Codmother there as an option if you find yourself in this part of town.
It feels like a small dark basement, and for all intents and purposes that's what it is. The music is solid, the drink are cheap, and its a solid time -

Quality bar, etc etc. Good people and booze. Wow how much do I have to write? Because I'll keep going. I mean it's not really that kind of place that you only go to if you need this long of a review. That's the review. Don't go there if you need more than this.

Started out there with a nice unpretentious feel. We didn't do any food, mostly just the $6 PBR + whiskeys. As the night got later the place filled up and the music got louder - went from divey and chill to people pouring in to dance and drink. Not bad at all, but I definitely preferred the earlier mood. Will definitely make this a regular U St stop.
